Anthony Joshua (20-0, 20 KOs) defeated Carlos Takam (35-4-1, 27 KOs) retaining his IBF/WBA heavyweight titles with a 10th round stoppage TKO win at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
From the beginning of the fight Carlos Takam seemed confidents even at times grinning at Joshua, he was very confident and stepped towards the Heavyweight champion. During round 2 Takam broke Joshuas nose from a head-butt which clearly made Joshua angry and more aggressive when throwing punches.
Takam took this fight with only 12 days’ notice due to Joshuas mandatory challeneger Kubrat Pulev pulling out. Therefore, with such a short time to prepare fans were excited as the rounds went on.
However, during round 4 Joshua landed a strong right-hand punch which opened a cut above the right eye of Takam. Furthermore, during round 7 Takam was cut over his left eye from a right hand from Joshua. With both eyes cut, Takam still fought bravely and didn’t show signs of slowing down.
The rest of the fight saw dominance by Joshua over Takam and although Takam was bleeding he did not show that he was hurt or disorientated. Joshua carried on dominating the rounds which led referee Phil Edwards to stop the fight during round 10 whilst Takam was still standing. This caused the 80,000 boxing fans in the Arena to start booing as they felt that Joshua should have been allowed to knock Takam down.
After the fight, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said that he wants to Joshua to fight WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “Bronze Bomber’ Wilder in the UK. Joshua as excited about this as many Boxing fans feel that the only real Heavyweight threat to Joshua right now is Deontay Wilder.
