Around 1 Billion people, both Boxing and MMA were watching Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor today to see if it will live up to the hype.
The Former 5 division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0, 27 KOs) guaranteed before the fight in many interviews that the fight wouldn’t go all 12 rounds and that he would stop McGregor before 12 rounds, well he did. Floyd Mayweather is known for being one of the best if not the best defensive Boxers of all time. However, all night he was offensive, putting pressure on the UFC star Conor McGregor (0-1). Eventually this resulted in the 10th round TKO. McGregor fans who attended the fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada were shocked as their man ate his own words.
Referee Robert Byrd stopped the fight after Mayweather kept punching McGregor and McGregor was not punching back. The official time of the stoppage was at 1:05 of the 10th.
The win for Mayweather makes his Boxing record the best ever (ironically that is what Mayweather calls himself “TBE”) beating Rocky Marciano record with his 50th win.
Mayweather stated in his post-fight interview that his game plan was to let McGregor waste his energy in the first few rounds and then finish him off, but it took longer than expected. For a MMA fighter, lasting 10 rounds is impressive, so credit should be given were due. The question is, did it only go 10 rounds because Mayweather wanted it to? Rumours say that Mayweather put a bet of $1 Million a 10th round KO.
The referee Robert Byrd let McGregor get away with a lot of fouls. He hit Mayweather with a high number of rabbit punches and low blows without being penalized.
McGregor stated in his post-fight interview “He (Mayweather) was composed. He was making me throw when he was patient with his shots”.
“I thought it was close. I thought it was a little early in the stoppage. They should have let me keep going. I was a little fatigued. He was a little more composed with the shots, especially in the later rounds.”
Floyd Mayweather has said that this will be his last fight and he will not come back out of retirement. Conor McGregor has said that he is open to Boxing again but he will definitely be going back to the UFC which is his home.
