Saul Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) was in a confident mood today at his media day with middleweight champion Gennady GGG Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) in Los Angeles, California.
Canelo and GGG threw a few punches for the camera, gave some interviews and played some mind games with each other today in front of the media to discuss their upcoming Boxing match in less than three weeks on September 16 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. A big question on everyone mind is the power of both Boxers. Canelo was asked whether Golovkin hits harder than him. It’s generally understood by the media and the Boxing public that Golovkin has more power than Canelo. Golovkin’s 89% knockout percentage vs. Canelo’s 67% KO percentage would suggest that Golovkin hits harder.
Furthermore Canelo was not able to knockout Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in his last fight on May 6th, even though Chavez Jr was hardly throwing punches back at Canelo. This could be a warning to indicate that Canelo does not have extreme power, especially compared to Golovkin. Canelo would only say that Golovkin is stronger in terms of strength, but not in the punching department.
The big fight of the year Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor is now finished therefore Canelo and GGG are using this time to promote their own fight, a real Boxing fight.
Canelo stated in his interview “Speed will be a big factor, an important factor in this fight,” He also added “Look, I’ve had big fights, important ones in my career, but this is the most important, the most dangerous of my career at the moment, and I’m taking the challenge. My team and I know this is 14 years’ worth of work. It’s a great responsibility, but we are ready for it. I see it as a fight which there will be a before and after Canelo”.
Golovkin’s last fight against Danny Jacobs also shows potential deffecinecies in Golovkin’s Boxing ability, Jacobs came in as an underdog and he lost to a controversial Unanimous decission. On paper Canelo is a better Boxer than Jacobs and therefore if it goes to Unanimous Decission for this fight then Canelo could win.
Canelo said “Maybe he’s stronger than me, maybe” Canelo also added ”I think though that being stronger than me doesn’t mean he punches harder than me. I have intelligence, and you have to be precise of when to land your punches so they are the same power wise like his or stronger”.
